What is NYSSMA?
Every spring the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) runs a series of festivals in all regions of New York State. These events provide an opportunity for music students to perform scales, a solo and sight reading in front of a qualified music teacher who will make detailed comments and give a numerical rating (grade) on the performance.
How is NYSSMA music rated as to difficulty?
The NYSSMA manual (published every three years) contains thousands of selections for all instruments. Each piece is given a rating or level of difficulty. Level 1 is the easiest. 6 is the most difficult.
Does NYSSMA count toward my orchestra grade?
NYSSMA is a chance to work towards a solo performance opportunity and a great learning experience. While participation in NYSSMA is highly encouraged, it is not required at St. Martin's and as such, does not effect your class grade. Additionally, the NYSSMA score is the primary tool used to assemble the All County and Long Island String Festival orchestras.
Who can participate?
Any student in 4th grade or above may choose to participate. Students who chose to participate in NYSSMA are students looking for a challenge and who are willing to put in some extra work to go above and beyond.
Do I have to have a private teacher to perform in NYSSMA?
Studying privately is a wonderful experience which allows students to move at their own pace and get individualized attention. (Please see the "Private Lessons" tab to the left for more information). Students choosing to perform a level IV or above are strongly recommended to look into a private teacher- the material at this level is much more demanding and time consuming. Please speak to Mrs. Spitaliere if you need help finding an appropriate teacher.
However, you do NOT have to have a private lesson teacher outside of school to participate. There will be extra-help sessions that students can sign up for to work with Mrs. Spitaliere on their solos. Please remember that your success in NYSSMA is completely dependent on the amount of work you put into your preparation, whether you work with me or another teacher.
Can I choose any solo to play?
No. Only those solos that are rated in the NYSSMA Manual may be performed. In picking a solo, the teacher must weigh not only the level of the piece to be performed, but also the student's level of advancement in scales and sight reading which are determined by level as well.
How do I choose my solo?
You don't. I will assign a piece for you to perform. If you are studying with a private teacher outside school, I will still have final approval to ensure that the selected solo is appropriate and an approved solo in the manual. These assignments are made several months prior to the annual NYSSMA Festival so you will have ample opportunity to prepare.
Why must I purchase two copies of my solo?
One copy is for the student. The second copy is for the NYSSMA Judge.
Can I use photocopies?
Photocopies are not permitted. NYSSMA is considered a public performance and by US copyright law you many not use photocopies in a public performance.
Can I perform on a second instrument?
Yes, you may! Many of our students perform a NYSSMA solo on piano, voice, or guitar in addition to their orchestra instruments. Each additional instrument will require a separate registration and fee.
What does registration cost?
Level I-IV: $16
Level V-VI: $21
